Bag Song

plastic bags apparently grow on trees
whose branches must be bare,
free of all their handled leaves
which sit at the stores bound in bunches,
as bags to be given away so freely.

buy a matchbox?
you’ll get a bag
buy a box of toothpicks?
you’ll get a bag
a CD?
you’ll get
a bag,
it's a bag you bought?
that’ll get you a bag!

If you don’t decline this plastic inheritance
you’ll get not just one bag
but lots of bags -
multicoloured bags
striped bags
white bags
big bags
small bags
but be sure, you’ll get a bag!

take your own bag,
you won’t need a bag
put it in your pocket
you don’t need a bag
hold it in your hand
you won’t want a bag

bags for the dump
bags for the river
bags for everything…
bags for all seasons

if you can get away
from the bags
bags I get to follow you,
a land without plastic bags:
now you can’t bag that!
