Balance

They always like to be 
balanced
reason in the middle of the road
and we are to remain struck down
innocent-eyed creatures of habit
simple creatures caught in the headlights
of properly considered opinion

my sympathies must weigh lightly,
so little balanced by so much -
and the crippling burdens of conscience
of mainstream civility and servility
must weigh so heavily 

don’t forget your balance, 
your common sense - 

remaining unhindered by the gravity
of the situation
establishes a comfortable balance

the see-saw sits, balanced,
perfectly beckoned by the abyss
scapegoats hover over eternity,
and those complex creatures feet are planted firmly
until they step off and millions fall

and they will shrug their shoulders
liberal guilt the burden of remaining balanced
while a square meal is denounced as ideology

now, where’s the balance?
