Can't feed a dog

What does dependant mean
when, aged sixteen
your car can kill

at eighteen you can fill
your glass with amber fluid
you can vote, even get married

without permission you can fuck,
get drunk, drive fast and with luck
survive the torrent of electoral promises

yet if you try to improve your intelligence
by entering the hallowed halls of academe
you’ll find independance ain’t what it seems

twenty-one - you’ve got the key to the door
but if you think that you can get much more
money, bad luck honey, the cheque’s not coming

no, even at twenty four your still slumming
it as a grown up child, dependant on Mum
and Dad - if you want money, borrow some!

we’ll become the clever country - initiative!
grow those plants, sell your body,
give it
to science for kicks learn tax evasion, learn how quick an alarm can be disabled, a car stolen for quick sale, you’ll go far blowing strangers in alleyways using up all those giveaways its time to think on your feet Parents might have shown the street to you, yet dependence is bequeathed the fiscal sword cuts, unsheathed at twenty five humanity will be yours, the charity of our government so immense its just common sense students must be poor and less is always more you will survive until twenty five - we really do like you now I’m through charge your glass "to the underclass!"
