The Great Transformation

he’s not rich, not greedy
a miraculous transformation -
the robber baron has gone,
replaced by the entrepeneur

the wealthy used to have to hide away
and make grand and noble statements
when opening museums
or when addressing the nation

but now there's no need for donations
in order to deflect the critics
because everyone agrees
we are all just jealous
and should really be on our knees
thanking them for the minute chance
that we might get to be as rich

no, now being wealthy isn’t wrong
and society is one big capital venture
making money is the noblest of pursuits
we all get to share in the sweet profits
and gorge ourselves on the fruits
that the market provides us

now wealth isn't stolen
it's being created
by the efforts of the wealthy
with the help of the sedated
and don't you dare call them robbers
or say they ain't caring
cause they'll send round the coppers
to change the opinions your airing
cause everyone is happy, everyone is free
in this oh so perfect world of true equality
