I'm Middle Management!

I

He buys his paper every morning
reading it closely on the train
he is a thinking man
he is an important man
he is middle managment

he gets to work before 9am
makes sure he works past 5
(except on Fridays
when there’s always time
for a hearty liquid lunch)

he has seniority
he is highly valued
he is middle management

he’s got a comfy salary
with all the cosy perks
including giving orders
to others less secure than him
those who are just workers

he has power
he can make them poor
he is middle management

he’s making the company lean
laying off the wage-slaves
but he’s safe
he knows they value him -
a wise mind is priceless

he has secure employment
he is middle class
he is middle management

II

he’s talking to his superior
can’t believe what he’s hearing
losing his guaranteed income
facing the totally unbelievable
how could he be unemployed?

He is in shock
he can’t feel his legs
he was middle management

he bought the promise of the dream
now he’s surplus to requirements
been downsized out of existence
time to join the dole queue
learning to live with the state’s assistance

he is no one
he has no job
he thinks he’s still middle class

but he’s not, because

he isn’t middle management
