Monument

Let us build a monument
in honour of the twentieth century
to remind us of our progress
so we may revel in our humanity

Let it stand, silver, shiny
in concrete and metallic splendour
to remind us of our triumphs
so we may remember our valour

Let it speak of the white man's burden
in honest appraisal of history
to show us the good intentions
so we may appreciate our integrity

Let there be great celebration
in recognition of their charity
to enjoy the fruits of their hard work
so they can toast to liberty

Let us forget the struggles
fired by freedom's fuel
to only be once again defeated
so that other masters could rule

Let there be no mention of poverty
in the many fine speeches
let there be no dissenting voices
in the song of the new millenium

to criticise is so much sour grapes
so maintain your servile smile
to challenge is to speak heresy
so smile friends, that's the style!

Yes, let us build a real monument
in concrete let the bones be set
to illustrate how monuments are made
so we'll never let ourselves forget
