This page is dedicated to environmental concerns such as the problems caused by rattlesnake roundups. Much of the information provided on this page came from members of the THE KANSAS HERPETOLOGICAL SOCIETY. The 1997 KHS President, Karen Graham, of the SEDGWICK COUNTY ZOO located in Wichita, Kansas has put in countless hours in regard to the rattlesnake roundup issue in Kansas. Members of The KHS need the support of individuals as well as wildlife and environmental organizations from across Kansas. Only a group effort can provide the influence needed to put an end to rattlesnake roundups in the State of Kansas.

A QUICK NOTE ON KANSAS' RATTLESNAKE ROUNDUPS...Rattlesnake roundups were first legalized in Kansas several years ago. They are held near the small town of Sharon Springs near the Colorado border in western Kansas. They are advertised as a family event with such activites as showing people how to get into a sleeping bag with live rattlesnakes, as well as having a public butcher shop where families can watch as the snakes are killed and skinned.
There has never been a true scientific study as to the effects of these roundups on future populations of rattlesnakes or the impact on any other species of Kansas wildlife. The roundups have been opposed by nearly every environmental and wildlife group in the state of Kansas - YET THEY ARE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE!
Many groups are working to find a way to ban rattlesnake roundups in Kansas. One such group is a group of middle school science students from TOPEKA COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. Some of these young Topeka Collegiate students have been researching the Sharon Springs roundups for more than three years.
The TCS students along with other concerned citizens from Kansas and around the world need your help if the roundups are to be banned. Use the links below to find out more about not only the Kansas rattlesnake roundup, but also about other such events that are held each year in other states.LINE2-->

Melissa has created a page with a diversity of information that should be of interest to anyone with an interest in the study of herpetology. It has some excellent information about keeping herps as pets. It also has information on rattlesnake roundups. This site is highly recommended.
NOTE: Two people were bitten by rattlesnakes at the 1997 roundup in Wallace County, Kansas in May. Both survived.
