~ Cape Primrose ~

Common Name: Cape Primrose
Scientific Name: Streptocarpus
Type: Indoor
Month of bloom: Year-round
Height: 8-10" (20-25cm)

Cape primrose (Streptocarpus X hybridus) is a 6-8" plant with wrinkled, strap-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers of white, pink, purple, blue. Flowers fairly freely. Fairly hardy.

The cape primrose is an ideal houseplant. These relatives of the African violet grow and bloom well in cool indoor conditions and moderate to bright light, with no direct sun. Grow primroses in a moist, well-drained soil. Give them moderate water while the plants are in active growth (late spring through early fall), but water them sparingly during the winter. Crown rot is a common problem if the plant's soil is kept too wet. Fertilize Streptocarpus with a water soluble fertilizer at half strength during the plant's growth period. Should your plant be "reluctant" to flower, increase the amount of light it receives.
