His Majesty King Bhumibol of Thailand is known as the working monarch of the world. He visits the remote areas all over the country to listen to the villager's problems and tries to improve their livelihood through various methords and the Royal Projects.
For His Majesty, the people come first. The people's well-being has to be the first and this goes beyond public pledges or commitments.
"We will reign with righteousness, for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese peoples"
Those are the traditional words pronounced by each Thai King on the day of his accession to the Throne. Although seemingly simple enough in content yet those words reflect very well the essence of kingship which has developed through the long and varying history of the Thai nation. That history is marked by two outstanding features :
Thailand, also known for a long period as Siam, has always managed to retain its independence while nations all around fell prey at once time or another to colonialist powers, and Thailand has always had a King on the Throne as the nation's leader. It is therefore not surprising that the two features are often held as being intertwined,
which makes the study of the function of the Thai Throne all the more vital to a biographical sketch of any Thai King.
On His Majesty the King's birthday on Deccember 5, the day when all Thais direct their thought towards the one person who is the focal point of love and repect, Donmuang Homepage joins the whole nation in wishing His Majesty a very happy birthday and long healthy life.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan yesterday (Friday May 26, 2006) presented His Majesty the King with a lifetime achievement award in recognition of the global relevance of his call for a sufficiency approach to development.
