Summary
In 1968 the total world population was estimated at roughly 3,500,000,000. By the year 2000, at the present rate of growth, it will have risen to over 7,500,000,000.
It is widely recognized that the growth and control of human poipulations is the major biological problem overshadowing the second half of the twentieth century. Positive action in the next decade is essential; yet social inertia is immense, tradition and superstition die hard, and funds for further research are lacking.
Population Control is a balanced account of the present state of knowledge, set against a background of comparative studies. In a series of essays by various authorities on factors affecting the growth and control of natural populations (including protozoa, plants, birds, small and large mammals) man's predicament is placed in a biological perspective. Statistics on the growth of human populations, methods of fertility control and their application in different human societies are also considered in this new Pelican, as well as social and economic implications of family limitation.
