Abundance: Moderately common. Breed in coastal areas of eastern and south-
eastern Australia, including Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Habitat: Tall, open forests. Movement: Sedentary. Description: Smallish, dark yellow eyes. Short, broad head. Upperparts,
tail dark greyish-brown with indistinct off-white bars. Underparts whitish
with dark greyish-brown chevrons. Slow deliberate flight on huge wings.
Juvenile: White underparts and crown contrast with small dark streaks and
dark eye patches. Size: 55cm. Males larger. Voice: Slow, deep, resonant double-hoot: occasionally single. Female has
upward inflection on 2nd note of call.
