RUFOUS OWL

(Ninox rufa)

Abundance: Uncommon. Breed in top regions of Australia, ie. northern most posts of Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland.
Habitat: Closed forests.
Movement: Sedentary.
Description: Rufous colouration. Flat crown. Greenish-yellow eyes in indistinct facial mask. Upperparts very closely barred dark rufous-brown, buff. Underparts closely barred brownish-rufous and whitish. Juvenile: Head, underparts pure white, except distinct dark facial discs.
Size: 51 cm.
Voice: Deep, double-hoot; second note shorter. Sexes call differently.
