GREETINGS FROM GITCHI GUMMI! LAKE SUPERIOR (GITCHI GUMMI IN OJIBWA OR CHIPPEWA) belongs to the coldest (8* C ave.) largest freshwater systems of the world, was formed by glaciers and is connected by the locks to the other great lakes of N.America. Presently we are enjoying a surface water temperature of 17*C(63*F), a great sail and sunny skies. Images of CHEQUAMAGON lAST WEK WE HAD WARM DRY DAYS AND COOL CRISP NITES WHILE AT THE DOCK IN HISTORIC ASHLAND. Native americans lived in this region for 12 000 years. Early French Explorers came in 1620 followed by furtraders, lumbermen and oreminers. during that week, Jim successfully rebuilt the "seawater" pump and installed new faucets at the galley sink. Thanks to Davey Jones PH also now has a converter for shore power and we monitor the batteries with our new Link 10 meter. besides the many types of gulls. we see loons, mergansers, cormorants and other ducks. The forests of the Apostle Islands and the Bayfield Peninsula support bear, wolf, coyote, many deer and racoons. Swans and geese are in the marshes near Ashland. The waters are rich with cold water fish: salmon, trout, whitefish and herring. On our last day in ashland (Sunday) we were invited to a traditional fishboil, put on by the marina Association. The lake trout was most delicious. Dave, a dock neighbour and charter fisher operator, even sent some fish for us to take along on our voyage to GRAND MARAIS MINNNESOTA. Next stop Suzi Island no inhabitants, near GRAND PORTAGE. As Roland liked to say in Mallorca: uns geht es gut. UND HOFFENTLICH EUCH AUCH. Jim & Rosi. 1
