dear friends, now in ashland ,wisconsin. our return route from wawa to the apostle isl. changed from michigan to minnesota. while anchored in brule harbour in turquoise water next to a beaver community under the towering cliffs of old womans bay with constant south and southwest winds, we decided to leave the canadian east coast by way of michipicoten isl. we loved our stay at cozens harbour, with blueberries, thimbleberries and raspberries. no bears - just friendly caribou in velvety antlers. with only south wind in the forecast while on michipicoten we gave up on travel to UP of michigan and sailed wnw 24 hrs. on a fast reach thru thunderstorms to otter cove on ontarios black bay peninsula. we arrived in pouring rain but were greeted by 3 playful river otters in the anchorage. after drying out the hike to the waterfalls and the beautiful high lake above was everything that dave and pat DORIS E had promised. several friendly cruising sailors - ALLEGRO, welcome to the list larry and judy, ARGO, DAHLFIN II, and PENNYCRESS II sought shelter in otter cove with us from a forecasted gale. during the high winds, we did drag a bit toward the beach and found a big log stuck in the bruce while reanchoring - wind howled more and PH2 (the rib) did a summersault behind the stern. next day ron and bonnie helped us locate jims missing shoes and the oar. the inflatable kayak was valuable in retrieving them from the marsh. then it was onto loonharbour, thompson isl. and grand marais minnesota. mostly in fog where we caught up with ALLEGRO . after a daylight crossing to the south it was a relief to anchor at rocky isl. with clear skies , warm sunshine and milder waters. it was nice for DORIS E and IRISH MIST to come out of their way to meet with us for supper befor they headed off thru the night for isle royale and onto the slate isl. also got to meet michael and patricia of KATJA. after the beauty of the canadian wilderness, we are now enjoying the amenities of chequamegon and madeline as we run errands on foot from the boat. looking foreward to our homeport CORNY soon. alles gouda jim and rosi.
