Subject: Computer woes
Hello Folks!
We arrived safely in Santa Cruz, Canary Islands yesterday.
It was an uneventful flight and all of our luggage made it here.
Northwest should take lessons from Iberia.
Something didn´t survive the trip -- Charles´s computer!
We found out that the laptop was dead before we even got on
the plane at New Orleans. We took it apart in the airport using
a Swiss-Army knife and a tiny screwdriver for eyeglasses. The
problem appeared to be the internal power supply. When we arrived
here, we tried to have it fixed, but there was nothing the
computer stores on the island could do for us. Our computer is
4 years old. As a $60 phone call to the US revealed, parts will be
very hard to find for this old clunker.
Charles is not happy. The computer was supposed to allow us
to get weather faxes through the communications radio, and was
also taken so that Charles could get some work done while travelling.
He is left with pencil and paper, but no files and data. This trip
will represent the longest time that Charles has ever spent away
from a computer in the last 20 years.
We´re provisioning the boat and will leave tomorrow morning.
The boat is FILLED with food! It´s wonderful. We have pretty good
weather. It´s drizzling rain, but no storms. We´re so busy with
boat stuff that we´ve no time to see the town or sample the food.
It seems like a terrific place to visit, though. The mountains
(volcanoes) in the background are beautiful and the harbour is lovely.
We´re still trying to decide whether to aim for Barbados
or Trinidad. We´ll let you know our final destination tomorrow
morning, when we send our last email message. Communications from
then will be only by radio.
Libelle seems very fit and ready. That boat sure looks small,
though, and the ocean very big. It only took us about 6 hours to
fly from New York to Madrid. Getting back looks like it will be
slower.
Alles Gouda,
Yvonne
