"Perhaps the panda in a small way can help change our concepts. Its seeming simplicity permits us to discern the qualities that make it so alluring. Having transcended its mountain home to become a citizen of the world, the panda is a symbolic creature that represents our efforts to protect the environment. Though dumpy and bearlike, it has been patterned with such creative flourish, such artistic perfection, that it almost seems to have evolved for this higher purpose. A round, rather flat face, large black eye patches, and a cuddly and clumsy appearance give the panda an innocent, childlike quality that evokes universal empathy, a desire to hug and protect. And it is rare. Survivors are somehow more poignant than causalities. Together, these and other traits have created a species in which legend and reality merge, a mythic creature in the act of life."

Giant Panda: Bear or Raccoon?

"The panda is not yet safe from extinction, but a change in attitude has already made possible the first step along the path to security-the establishment of the panda reserves. A truly certain future for the panda will require a change in public awareness of a magnitude as great as that which made Stevens's 'pious hope' a reality, but the path has been marked out and it is now simply a matter of deciding whether or not we want to make the journey. As George Schaller points out in the preface of his authoritative book (Schaller, 1985), 'There are two pandas, the one that exists in our mind, and the one that lives in its wilderness home.' The chances are that unless the popular enthusiasm for the giant panda can be translated into effective conservation measures, both giant and red pandas will become extinct together, and we will be left only with the animal of our imaginations."
