Dave's External Backpack CD-ROM drive with Sound
What is it?
- Dave found this reconditioned drive in April 1999 for $146.15 including
shipping at PCConnection. It
works on DOS systems using a minimum of memory, and connecting to
a standard parallel (printer) port. Backpack is the model name, a trademark
of Micro Solutions.
Included in Dave's red LLBean shoulder bag are the following hardware:
- CD-ROM drive
- power cable
- parallel data cable
Also included are the following diskettes:
- Win95 Boot Disk w Utilities
- Win95 Boot Disk w Backpack/Sound
- Backpack CD-ROM with Sound version 2.12 Setup for DOS and Windows 3/95/98/NT
(3 disks)
- Backpack CD-ROM version 2.13 Setup for DOS and Windows 3/95/98/NT (1
disk)
- 3com 3c5x9x.exe (drivers for 3Com Etherlink Network Interface Card)
If you're setting up a new Windows95 installation
- insert in the A drive the Windows 95 Boot Disk with Utilities
- power on the system
- format the hard drive with system
- at DOS prompt A:\> type FORMAT C: /S and press Enter
- power off the system
- insert in the A drive the Win95 Boot Disk w Backpack/Sound
- power on the system
- the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS on this disk should have
identified the Backpack and assigned it the next available drive letter
(D: unless the system has additional drives)
- make the CD-ROM the active drive
- at DOS prompt type D: and press Enter
- Type SETUP and press Enter
- Windows 95 Setup Procedure should begin
