Hi Gay: I share your enjoyment of gardening. We too quit work so we could enjoy the "beauty" that our Lord put here for us. I have been here in your Site for hours. Your home and gardens are beautiful. I have enjoyed all the pictures so much. We are having a orrible Ice Storm here in Virginia and we were without power for over 12 hours...we hunkered down in the family room and covered up real good. I can't wait for Spring...we have 2 acres not much compared to your place. We have a small water garden, again not much compared to yours. I not only bookmarked your Site I have a "short-cut" on my desktop! Thank you for all the beauty and information. Love all the birds too.

Congratulations! You have created a beautiful garden. I well understand your trepidation as your pond was being dug. After years dreaming of a pond, big and deep enough for fish, waterfowl and me on a hot day, we had one dug two years ago. I was counting on underground springs for water, but as the excavato gouged deeper and deeper and there wasn't so much as a dribble I began to panic. The pond had been my big dream. If we ended up with a deep dry crater how could I expect my husband Larry, to ever buy, (and I mean 'buy' literally) into another dream? Finally, at ten feet, the first of three springs appeared and in less then a month the pond had filled. I was vindicated! Larry, enjoys the pond as much as I do, (he even joins me for a swim), and I continue dreaming garden dreams. I look forward to visiting your web site in the future.

I have enjoyed reading your stuff in the Mediterranean gardening group, now find your web pages even better. I am curious about your roses - old ones, I think you said? - because they are my real passion, although I am trying to be ecologically sound and grow things that like the conditions of our Santa Cruz mountain 13 acres. We are having frost these nights. We are colder than the town of Santa Cruz in winter, hotter in summer - surrounded by native redwoods, ceanothus, manzanita, madrones, calochortu , etc... My gardens are mostly fenced, both to separate them from the forest and also to attempt to deal with the deer. I particularly like the English gardening tradition, which is hard to achieve on a diet of little water, lots of sun, gophers, deer, awn-destroying raccoons, etc. Still, we are profoundly blessed, as I know each morning when I step on the deck and breath the truly fresh air, and see the shafts of sunlight through the redwood branches.

Fairbank, 39 Rectory Rd., Farnborough, Hants., GU14 7BT, UK. 19th November 98 Dear Gay, Great photographs and holding narative, excellent site. I garden here in Farnborough, small garden growing Rhododendrons and Azaleas plus other acid lovers. I have grown successfully quite a few from seeds - Alan Clark's collections from China and Vietnam and Japanese seed from Hideo Suzuki. If you are in the UK you are very welcome to visit Fairbank, not far from Heathrow (about 22miles). I have many rhodo friends around the world quite a few have visited, Japan, Germany, Spain, Holland, Poland, France, U A, & New Zealand. I agree with your thoughts about Exbury. It is a very fine garden, I was able to take a friend from Japan there last spring. We are lucky living here in the southeast of England being near many beautiful gardens. Best Wishes, Ray Redford.

What a treat it was to see your wonderful garden. We visited Tasmania in January'93 and I fell i love with your beautiful country. My sister and her husband live in Moonah Heights. How fortunate you are to live in such a moderate climate. Living in Can da ( just North East of Toronto) has its trials, especially in the winter. It is a land of great extremes, right now it so hot some days, I have to come inside by noon. Gardening here is difficult because of the shortness of growing season. I am current y trying to creat a garden as we moved to a new property 3 years ago, 1/2 acre with nothing but weeds a bit of grass. We have a long way to go before I can sit back and relax. But I just pray for a long summer and fall. Have put you on my Favourites! I will visit you often in the dead of winter!

Dear Gay Loved your site. Haven't finished reading it all yet. Hope to soon. We my husband, Klaus, and I (Catriona) are tackling our back garden that has been neglected for awhile. We are going to put in a tool shed, gazebo and pond with waterfall and stream. I wi l be having a very small perennial border now to make way for the rest. That's okay with me though less to weed. We are having fun doing it. bye for now Catriona and Klaus :-) :-) fellow wrinklies. ps We were thinking of moving to Tasmania at one time. It always sounded so romantic.

Magnificent growth! I get the impression that in spite of the many birds (you wouldn't want a million apples anyway) and runaway plants, you love the place. Except maybe the outdoor facilities. My almost-acre is in the woods; had to remove 21 trees to et the med. house in, and lose more every winter, yet not enough sun to grow much but shade plants. I've always wanted to see Tasmania. Thanks for the view. (signed) another wrinkley
