Water lilies need to be divided and repotted periodically. This is our 'Texas Dawn' after only one year. It has crawled right out of the pot. The rhizome on the left has a diameter of 5" and extends beyond the pot by about 12". The rhizome at the top of the photo is not quite as large; it extends about 9" beyond the pot. In this area hardy lilies never go completely dormant and may need to be repotted every year. In cooler areas, lilies may be allowed to grow in the same container for several years.
After lifting the lily from the pond, it is removed from its pot and the soil is washed away.
