CANNACEAE (Canna)

Tropical herbs growing from rhizomes, with banana-like leaves; mostly showy flowers.

Rhizomatous herbs with erect stems, spirally arranged leaves, and terminal open-branched  inflorescence.
One functional stamen, half petaloid; 2 to 5 petaloid  staminodes of varying shape and size, bright colored. Style partly petaloid. Fruit dehiscent, seeds lacking aril.

One genus, about 50 species.Tropical America.
