This journey began in the northern part of Quebec on the 17th of June 1997; the journey's start was officialy recorded on July 1, 1997 in Montreal. Michaël biked on the Trans-Canadian Highway 17 until he arrived at the border of the province on Manitoba, Canada. From there, he rode Highway 1 across Manitoba and Saskatchewan to Medicine Hat, Alberta. He then picked up Highway 168 towards Lethbridge, Alberta, close to the U.S. border at Montana. Then he got on Highway 5, which brought him across the Montana border at Carway. After climbing the Waterton-Glacier International Park (which has an elevation of over 10,000 feet), he then got on Highway 3 going south to meet the Lewis and Clark Highway (which is Highway 12 going west). That route brought him into Idaho and then Washington State. He then cycled along the Columbian River on Highway 14 to the city of Portland, Oregon and then pursued his trek on Highway 30, bringing him to the beginning of Highway 101 in Warrenton, Oregon on the Pacific Coast and then pursued the journey through California bringing him to Baja California.

A few changes took place during my travels in Baja California. For example, arriving in the city of La Paz I met a very interesting man who was on a kayaking trip down the Baja peninsula for 850 miles from San Felipe, near the mouth of the Colorado river, to the tip of Baja California in Cabo San Lucas. However, these changes occurred during my stay at the Pesion de California in La Paz. The kayaker's name was Sean Daugherty. After hearing about the journey I was on, he decided to sell his kayak and equipment to purchase a bike to follow me. Which deprived him of finishing his journey, the final 160 mile stretch from La Paz to Cabo San Lucas but unfortunately we did not succeed in finding a decent bike for the price we could afford, so therefore I left La Paz for Cabo San Lucas without my friend Sean. Which I would have appreciated very much as a biking part.

Upon arriving to Cabo San Lucas, I went to meet Cat Madama a friend I previously met her in Gorda Suda, California USA. This lead me to meet James Madama, her former husband. Jmaes decided to join me by following me with his 45 foot "Explorer" motor home! After a few days of discussion with him about his things to do before leaving Cabo San Lucas I had to bike back on Mexico Highway 1 to La Paz on the 13th of April, 1998. This gave James time to organize . I arrived two days later in La Paz at the Pension de California. A few days later on the 20th of April I met Sean again after 14 days, while I was talking to Jason on the phone explaining to him that I wanted to leave for Mazatlan the following day. I gave James directions so he could find me on the mainland. We said "Hasta Luego" (See you soon), me having mixed emotions of this conversation.

Sean was doing allright, smiling being glad to see me and the same on my behalf. Like the old days Sean took the other bed in room 12, because of the discount price that the owner Ricardo gave me. Later that evening, having a discussion with Sean about my plans and the possibilty of trying to join me again by finding a bike hopefully, I received another call from James telling me that he really wanted to join but needed more time to prepare. By offering me to go back down to Cabo by bus to help him out putting pieces together. I told him that I would stay in La Paz for another two days, I was glad of having the possibility to help more people by having James, a motor home and possibly my friend Sean which he didn't know anything of the new developments. Arriving into to the room, I said to Sean the announcement of my new partnership with James and his motor home. Sean looked at me, smiled, seeming to think that this entire situation was meant to be so he decided without hesitation to join. So, now I am being followed by "Explorer 1" and Sean. Still in need of a bike.

If anybody knows someone with a bike or an address on the coast of Mexico sign my guestbook PLEASE, I will try to update my journey as much as I can considering the difficulties to have internet access. Therefore, I ask you to be patient and I will get back to you soon. Thank You All, brothers and sisters of the world for making this quest possible. I hope to here from you all soon.
Michael and the crew

By the way, the owner of "Explorer 1" has one beautiful empty apartment in Cabo San Lucas for rent. Contact our friend Douglas Christensen at Century 21, Costa Azul ,who has made this update possible, at:

Now I am currently cycling the Pacific coastline of Mexico, after completing the 1,200 mile stretch to the tip of Baja California, at the city of Cabo San Lucas. Michael returned to La Paz in the state of Baja California Sur to take the ferry to mainland Mexico to the city of Topolobampo. He is biking south on the coastal highway towards Guatemala, continuing down the Pacific coast down to Cape Horn Argentina to return on the Atlantic coast back up through South America, Central America, Mexico, the United States and Canada, continuing up to Alaska. Next Michaël will cycle the Pacific coast in Britich Columbia and Washington State. The expected completion of the tour will be on July 1, 2000. After completing the 39,000 mile tour of the hemispheres he will then bike across Washington State to get back to the Canadian border where he entered the US in Montana at some point of his journey.

Michaël has currently traveled about 9,500 miles..
