Hyder, Alaska

Hyder, Alaska, is the most southerly town that you can reach by road. It is also a great place to see glaciers. The one below is Bear Glacier and is actually in Canada, on the road down to Hyder. Even though it is not a large glacier it is still very impressive (especially if it is the first glacier you have ever seen!).

Another glacier that you can see in the area (it is in Canada too, but you have to drive through Hyder to get to it) is Salmon Glacier. On the was the scenery is absolutely stunning as you drive up the edge of a glacial valley on the way to the glacier. Salmon Glacier is much, much larger than Bear Glacier (the part that you can see that is) but at the time of year we went you could not get very close to it (the road was still snowed in). As you can imagine, this area gets a lot of snow in the winter - up to 19 feet was recorded in the winter just past (and that was an average year!!!).

Hyder also has a very interesting population - mainly people attempting to escape the norm would be my guess. Some houses were well kept, others looked quite shabby. All of the houses had steeply angled roofs so that the ample snow did not collapse it.
