Personal Background

I was born during the Khmer Republic period(1970-75). My exact birthplace was by the Sangké River in Battambang City, Battambang Province. I, who was one of the children of war and like many other Khmers, went through a great ordeal. Of the four males in my family, I am the only one who made it through Cambodia's Killing Fields in the late 70s. Thanks mostly in part to my beloved and caring mother who provided my sisters and I with enormous motherly protection during those difficult times. Because of her faith in Lord Siddartha and her self-sacrificed, we cheated deaths. I feel fortunate that our lives were spared.

In early March of 1982, my family arrived in America. We then briefly settled down in our home state Illinois, where i received my brief elementary education. In the summer of 1985, my family moved from Chicago, Illinois to Minneapolis, Minnesota. There I finished my secondary education and continued my post secondary education at the University of Minnesota at Morris, where I majored in sociology.

In memory of those innocents who perished during the Cambodian Holocaust.
