LUNA ADVISORY December 18, 1998

ANCIENT REDWOOD LUNA TO BE ILLUMINATED FOR HOLIDAY SEASON AS A BEACON OF HOPE
GROUPS LAUNCH CHRISTMAS LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGNS TO HOME DEPOT, AL GORE

Stafford, CA - On the evening of the Winter Solstice, Monday, December 21, tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill plans to illuminate the ancient redwood tree Luna, which she has occupied for over one year in an effort to save it from the chainsaws of the Pacific Lumber Company/Maxxam. Supporters of the tree-sit have donated dozens of flashing beacons, each with a range of over two miles, which will make the lights clearly visible from State Highway 101 in the Stafford area. This effort will make Luna the largest, oldest, living Christmas tree in the world.

"On this, the longest and darkest night of the year, Luna will shine as a beacon of hope for our forests, communities and our children," said Hill. "This tree will stand bright and tall, reminding each of us that in this time of sharing we must come together to find solutions."

The lighting of Luna also coincides with holiday letter writing campaigns that have been launched by both Hill and her supporters, and San Francisco's Rainforest Action Network (RAN). Working with numerous elementary and secondary school teachers that have contacted Hill and RAN, both groups have helped generate thousands of letters from schoolchildren across the nation urging protection of old growth forests as a holiday wish. As a part of RAN's campaign to pressure Home Depot to stop selling old growth wood products, on December 16, a dozen middle school students from Athens Montessori Middle School, their teacher Melody Mosby, and environmental activists presented 2,600 letters to Home Depot officials at company headquarters. Letters generated through Hill's efforts urge Vice President Al Gore to take action to protect old growth forests. Currently hundreds these of letters have been collected and will be mailed to Gore by Christmas.

"We as adults have a choice as to the legacy we will leave for our children. Our every action affects future generations," said Hill. "Children are voicing their concerns over the future of our planet, and we are obligated to listen."
