VASS FAMILY

1.JOHN VASS married ISABEL SKINNER. He had several children from Isabel and from his second wife HELEN SKINNER.
1.1.ALEXANDER VASS , son of Isabel, married MARGARET (PEGGY) BANNERMAN on 9 .1.1846 . Marriage registered at Fearn and Loth. They had met in Helmsdale at the fishing. She is said to have walked from Strath of Kildonan to Balintore to marry him. She was supposedly a pretty girl, but never completely accepted by the villagers.

Peggy was the daughter of JOHN BANNERMAN , a crofter,and LUCY MURRAY .They had children JOHN, WILLIAM, THOMAS, BARBARA , ANN, MARY,MARGARET, HANNAH and ELIZA.
Lucy Murray was the daughter of JOHN MURRAY and possibly MARGARET SUTHERLAND . John Murray and his brothers had had a large holding at Gartymore. John had helped an army deserter from the Battle of Culloden {?} and was forced to relocate.

Alexander and Peggy died within a few hours of each other in 1885 from typhoid. Alex died first, and Margaret on 2 June 1885. They had children:

3. Isabella born 1852 .She married David Vass

She had 7 children.

4. Thomas Vass born 1855-1936 .He was a fish dealer ; but also had the reputation as a bonesetter. He lived in Shandwick and later in Park Street. He married Jessie Morrison [Shonie] and had 6 children:

5. Elisa Vass ( 1858 -23.12.1911) married William MacKenzie on 9.10.1885 at Nigg. They had 5 children:

6. Nicholas Vass born 1861 and died 1862

7. Ann Vass born 1863 .She married Donald Ross . They had 5 children:
