In this section, we try to provide small updates on recent and
relevant scientific progress in PAH.
Recent articles from noted science journals:
Successful Withdrawal of Long-term Epoprostenol Therapy for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. This case report from San Diego in the October 2003 journal CHEST decribes successful discontinuation of Flolan in 4 patients who had been on Flolan for 2-13 years (average about 6 years). All patients had close to normal PA pressure while on Flolan, and were weaned off, onto oral therapies (just pills!) After almost a year, they are all doing well.
Expression of Human Herpesvirus 8 in Primary Pulmonary Hypertension.
This paper from Colorado in the September 2003 NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE decribes 10 of 16 patients with PPH where human herpes virus type 8 (HHV-8) was found in their lungs. Whether the virus has a role in causing PPH or is simply somehting that one gets when they have PPH is still unknown.
PAH Meeting, Venice Italy. Wow! Many of the World's experts in PAH met in June, 2003 to discuss research progress in PAH. Stay tuned for exciting and provocative news on this...
