Music...
I am missing a big list of directors, authors and music bands, so this list will grow in a daily basis for sure ! :)
Movies (By director):
Sally Potter: Orlando (1995) Nominated for several Oscars. The music, theme, fotography, direction ... and particularly when the actress stops the acting and looks into the camera doing (or not) a pertinent remark ... Impressive :) !
Michael Caton-Jones: Rob Roy (1995), The Jackal (1997) Irish director. He really pays attention to details. He definitely knows HOW to direct a movie (and to select good actors and scripts).
Stanley Kubrik: 2001, a Space Odyssey. Produced in 1963-64. Also: The clockwork Orange.
Riddley Scott: Blade Runner, Alien, 1942 ... Vangelis music included :)
Terry Gillian: Brazil,The 12 Monkeys: Genius, English director !.
Peter Weir: Fallen Angels and others. Let´s remember that this director is used also for commercial productions (particularly those from Peugeot latinoamerica, which are filmed in Uruguay and Argentina :).
Ian Softley: Hackers, Backbeat
Robert Rodríguez: El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn. I enjoy the way he handles the camera and his direction techniques. He is driven by no one but HIS own desire on that !.
Costa Gavras: Mad City.
Luc Besson: The Fifth Element, The perfect killer, Deep Blue, Subway
Sam Raimi: Noche Alucinante, El ejercito de las tinieblas, The quick and the dead (Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Leonardo Di Caprio): His camera movements ! his direction ! superb and crazy !.
George Lucas: THX 1138, one of his first big works, from where he took the THX name for his home theater audio specifications; and Star wars (trilogy)
James Cameron: Strange Days (Ralph Fiennes)
Steven Spielberg: Close encounters of the 3rd kind, E.T., Schindler´s list , ANTZ, etc.
Russel Mulcahy: He is an English director. He is responsible for the Highlander I and II movies, as also plenty other movies, including THE SHADOW (starring Alec Baldwin). He also directed all the best DURAN DURAN video clips, most notably the "ARENA" recital/movie.
Francis Ford Coppola: Apocalypse Now. This movie represents a joint work of several geniuses ... particularly it´s director, and the editor in chief that worked on it: Walter Murch. The movie rolls where 230 hours long ... they cutted it up to 2 hours 30 minutes. It took to them almost one year to edit all those film rolls.
BOOKS (by Writer):
Viviane Forrester: The Economic Horror. It is true that the vocabulary used in that book is unnecessary hmmm... poetic, but Forrester comes from that school. On the other side, the analysis that she makes about the human / economic / politic situation of our world is quite impressive.
Jeremy Rifkin: The End of the Work. Softer than "the Economic Horror", but equally valid ... read it ! :)l
John J. Robinson: Particularly: "Born in Blood: The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry" and "The Pilgrim´s Path". This writer is specialized in the history of the Medieval Britain. His book is quite interesting., and he is a well known and recognized historian, member of a number of well respected historical institutions.
Christopher Knight / Robert Lomas: This writers have some interesting books. Most notably is "THE HIRAM KEY: Pharaohs, Freemasons and the discovery of the secret scrolls of Jesus". Quite revealing over certain aspects and origins of freemasonry.
Walter Murch: "In The Blink Of An Eye". This film editor, responsible among others of the editing in "APOCALYPSE NOW", "THE CONVERSATION", "THE GODFATHER II and III" and "THE ENGLISH PATIENT" tells us everything he knows on the art of film editing. A MUST HAVE if you like this kind of material :)
Marvin Minsky / Harry Harrison: "TURING UTOPIA". You might recognize both names. The first one is one of the FATHERS of different Artificial Inteligence theories, and the other is a well known Science fiction writer. Both, united to write this novel which explores the evolution of mankind and artificial intelligence in a fabulous suspense novel. READ IT ! :)
William Gibson: Neuromancer, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Count Zero. I got all his books, but this three are the most representatives of his work. He is considered the Literature Father of the cyberpunk movement. He invented the term "Cyberspace" and envisioned the concept of "INTERNET" well ahead of schedule :) !!!
Arthur C. Clarke: All his writing is good. But his last books are somewhat bad (he is OLD!) ... best work: 2001, A Space Odyssey.
Isaac Asimov: All his writing. This writer DID MAINTAIN the quality over all of his work :) !
Ray Bradbury: Excellent ... and simple. I´ve always been impressed by this two factors in all his writing.
H.P. Lovercraft: WOW! Terror ! Even today I am impressed by his writing.! (He invented the NECRONOMICRON, and the Crazy Arab of Abdul Ahzared).
Music (By group / Interpreter):
Kraftwerk: All their work
Jean M. Jarré: I like mostly his first works up to ZOOLOOK (included).
Billy Idol: I recommend "Cyberpunk" album, but all of his music is good. who can possibly forget "Dancing With Myself" :)
Eurythmics: All their work ! Annie Lennox is cute, btw!
Art of Noise:All their work ! particularly enjoyable: PARANOIMIA, KISS, PETER GUNN, DRAGNET.
The Manhattan Transfer: wow ! hehe Ray´s Rockhouse, Twilight Zone (TV series music) and Soul Food to go ... interesting !
Prince: (and the revolution, oh ! those times): Purple Rain (anyone remembers this movie ? ! :)
