I have read all of these books and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes Fantasy or Science Fiction.

My all time favorite:
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
A trilogy of books, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, set in Middle Earth concerning Elves and men and, of course, Hobbits. Considered by many to be the greatest literary work of the 20th century. Frodo Baggins continues the adventures started by his Uncle Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit in an epic tale of good versus evil. A tale that begins in the days even before Elves as told in The Silmarillion.
These 5 books make up the greatest story I've every read, except for the Bible. Begin with The Hobbit, a childrens story of the adventures and misadventures of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves and the Wizard Gandolf. Next read The Lord of the Rings where the adventure continues and the action and mystery become intense. Then read The Silmarillion to see how it all started, and about the great achievments and the great downfalls that devistated the Elves and their faithful friends amongst the houses of men. Finally, if your like most other fans of Tolkien, you will want to re-read all of these books every few years.

The Foundation Trilogy and subsequent books by Issac Asimov
The first three books from the original Foundation series are Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. Then there are the sequels, Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth, and Forward the Foundation where the true hidden plan is discovered. Along with many of the other books written by Assimov, including his famous Robot series, I, Robot being the most well known, and more recent prequels which tie all of the books together into one monumental tale of galactic history from the 1980's through many thousands of years.

Watership Down by Richard Adams
You will never look at rabbits the same again. Fiver's flight to safety is wrought with dangers at every turn. Only his courage, and the courage and trust of his companions, keep them alive.

Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and other works by Robert Heinlein create an alternate future, and sometime past, history of mankind from the struggles of the twentieth century, to the colonization of the moon and Mars, to the stars beyond. I enjoyed nearly all of Heinlein's works. Three more of my favorites are Friday, about the struggles of a genetically altered young women yearning to be free from the prejudice she experiences in a difficult and dangerous world, Double Star, where and actor stumbles onto a job that that becomes the role of a lifetime, and Starship Troppers, about a young mans adventures in the military, battling the enemy, giant intelligent bugs, as they travel from planet to planet.
