1. Preamble
F-311 is the Digital Signal Processing Laboratory (DSP Lab) of the Department of ECCE. It also serves as a work laboratory for fifth year computer engineering students of the department. The lab functions under the authority and general supervision of the DSP Lab Coordinator designated by the Department of ECCE.
[top] 2. General Provisions
The DSP Lab shall serve as a venue for scholarly work and research in digital signal processing and other areas of electronics, computer, and communications engineering that may be pursued by students authorized to use the lab.
To the extent the DSP Lab Coordinator sees fit, authorized users of the lab shall be allowed to regulate their own use of the lab. Hence, in general, student users of the lab shall have the privilege of using the lab without the need for the coordinator or any faculty member to be actually present in the lab. Along with this privilege, student users of the lab shall have the responsibility of ensuring that an atmosphere of scholarly work and research is preserved in the lab at all times.
[top] 3. Specific Rules
These rules shall apply to fifth year students of the Department of ECCE. Individuals not covered by these rules may be given access to the lab under terms and conditions to be determined by the lab coordinator. The lab coordinator may suspend these rules partially or fully at any time. The lab coordinator may apply modified rules to any user or users of the lab.
[top] 3.1 Access to the DSP Lab
Use of the DSP Lab requires acceptance of its rules. Fifth year students using the lab are required to familiarize themselves with the rules and formally apply for use of the lab by filling out an application form and submitting it to the lab coordinator.
Fifth year standing by itself does not entitle students to continued use of the lab.
Students are allowed continued use of the lab if
they have applied for use of the lab, and their application has been approved by the lab coordinator. Students who do not formally apply for use of the lab may be asked to leave the lab at any time, except if and when they have actual classes in the lab.
On a case-to-case basis, the lab coordinator may assign priority to some users in the use of the lab's resources.
In the absence of the lab coordinator, authorized users of the lab may request the lab to be opened by faculty and staff of the Department of ECCE.
[top] 3.2. Conduct
Student users of the DSP Lab are responsible for proper use of all resources of the lab.
Books and other literary material belonging to the lab may not be brought out of the lab.
Equipment in the lab are not to be moved around nor brought out of the lab. Computer peripherals may not be transferred from one computer to another. Students may not bring new equipment into the lab, unless such has been approved by the lab coordinator.
Computers in the lab may not be opened up, nor their configurations changed. As a general rule, changes that require the control panel, or an equivalent, are prohibited. Configurations that may not be changed include, but are not limited to, the background, the screen saver, and the Internet Explorer homepage.
New software may be installed in the computers as long as these are consistent with the lab's purpose. All user files shall be placed in c:\usr or in directories created under c:\usr unless prior approval has been granted for placing them elsewhere. The c:\usr directory shall be shared read-only with no password. Only the c:\usr directories and CD-ROM drives may be shared.
Games shall not be played in the lab. The only exception to this rule is when theses, projects, or other course requirements involve games.
Users may not access sites on the internet that may be deemed pornographic.
Food and drinks are not allowed in the lab; smoking is not allowed in the lab.
The noise level in the lab shall be kept to a reasonable minimum at all times. If someone complains that the noise level is too high, then it is.
Each user must clean up after each use of the lab. The table tops must be cleared of all personal items. Trash of whatever nature must be disposed of properly.
The last users to leave the lab must make sure that PCs are shut down properly, lights and airconditioning turned off, and the door locked.
Users may leave personal items only in designated areas of the lab.
No successive overnight uses of the lab shall be allowed.
[top] 3.3. Self-regulation
Students who use the lab are required to log in and out on a log book provided in the lab.
Compliance Officers are student users who accept the responsibility of ensuring the proper use of the lab and its resources. They shall declare themselves to be compliance officers by placing an asterisk (*) before their names in the logbook when logging in.
Compliance Officers shall ensure that users who have formally applied for use of the lab be given priority in using the lab's resources. Only users who have formally applied for use of the lab may serve as compliance officers.
CE students may not use the lab in the absence of a CE Compliance Officer. ECE students may not use the lab in the absence of an ECE Compliance Officer.
When a compliance officer leaves the lab for a significant amount of time, he must ask one of the remaining users to become compliance officer. If none of the remaining users are willing or qualified to become compliance officers, they must all leave the lab. A user who takes over the role of compliance officer must log out, then log in again as compliance officer.
[top] 3.4. Sanctions for Misuse of the Lab
The minimum penalty for violation of any of the rules of the lab shall be one week suspension from the lab with "one-week suspension" defined as suspension from the lab starting from the time the suspension is meted out up to and including six class days thereafter. In particular, a user who is suspended from the lab on a Monday, shall not have access to the lab until Tuesday of the following week, assuming Monday thru Saturday are all class days.
The minimum penalty for a second offence shall be two weeks suspension. The penalty for a third offence shall be forfeiture of access to the lab.
The penalty for violations within 35 calendar days from the last day of classes for seniors shall be forfeiture of access to the lab for the rest of the semester including the semestral break that follows.
The compliance officer shall be responsible for meting out suspensions on those who violate any of the rules of the lab. Such suspensions shall be reported to the lab coordinator.
Users of the lab may suspend a compliance officer who violates the rules of the lab.
In the event that the compliance officer fails to suspend violators from the lab both the violators and the compliance officer at the time the violation was committed, shall be suspended from the lab.
All faculty of the ECCE Department have the authority to suspend violators.
A student user who has been suspended from the lab must post a public letter of apology addressed to all users of the lab. The letter of apology must mention the specific offenses committed and must include a pledge to abide by the rules of the lab following his suspension. The letter of apology must remain posted for at least one week. A suspended user who refuses to post a letter of apology shall remain suspended from the lab.
[top] 3.5. Amendments
The rules here may be added to and modified as the lab coordinator deems fit.
Student users of the lab may propose amendments to these rules. These amendments shall apply if they are approved by the lab coordinator.
Users of the lab are responsible for keeping themselves informed of any changes to these rules.
