The FCC recently adopted rules creating a new, noncommercial low power FM radio (LPFM) service. The new service will consist of stations with maximum power levels of 10 watts - reaching an area with a radius of between 1 and 2 miles - and 100 watts - reaching an area with a radius of approximately 3 ½ miles.

These systems have wide-area coverage and have battery backup power. I will be seeking similar agreements from other area repeater owners whose systems are not currently being used for ARES operations. E.C.'s are encouraged to develop a contingency plan in the event of primary system failure. I can ususally be found on 145.23, 145.17 and 147.30/146.955. I would appreciate a checkin from E.C.'s via repeater or e-mail to advise me of activity in your area. You can also find me on the 440 and 220 MHZ frequencies listed at the tail of my e-mail messages. O.E.S.
