Wolverine

Wolverine: featured in ALPHA FLIGHT

  • Real name: Jean-Paul Beaubier
  • First appearance: UNCANNY X-MEN #120, April 1979

  • Jean-Paul Beaubier is a member of the Canadian super-team Alpha Flight, and perhaps the most widely known gay male hero in the entire Marvel Universe. He has always been very protective of his sister Aurora, even though she has had different personalities, one of which was very accepting of his sexuality, another which was not. Northstar was a founding member of Alpha Flight, but he was always distant from most of the other members, particularly the male ones. He had a particular love/hate relationship with Walter Langowski, also known as Sasquatch, partly because he was attracted to him, and partly because he was overprotective of Jeanne-Marie/Aurora, who he was seeing at the time. At one point, the Norse deity Loki made Jean-Paul believe that his true heritage was Asgardian, as an elf, and invited him to be with "his people", in Asgard. This was quickly disproved, and Jean-Paul returned to Earth.
  • A while afterwards, Jean-Paul found a baby girl who was dying of AIDS. She had been abandoned by her birth mother, and so Jean-Paul adopted her, naming her Joanne Beaubier. That's when Major Maple Leaf arrived, to kill her. Northstar, the ever vigilant father, was not far away when the Major attacked. He defended his daughter just as fiercely as he would have had Joanne been of his own blood. Then Major Maple Leaf revealed just why he had been disgusted by the baby's existence. His own son had AIDS, but when it was his turn for help, he did not receive any treatment. Homophobic politicians had made cutbacks on funds directed towards treating people with AIDS -- that is if those people were gay. By contrast, Joanne, being adopted by a famous superhero and former Olympic athlete, had it easy in comparison. Northstar told Major Maple Leaf not to preach to him about the hardships that homosexuals must face. "I am gay," he told the Major. The Major chided him on being in the closet for all these years. He pointed out to him how much good he could have done had he made his sexuality public. Not long afterwards, Northstar indeed came out to the press.
  • Wolverine is currently not an active member of the most recent version of Alpha Flight. In fact he is unaware that the team has even been reformed. He is currently tending to his sister, who is suffering from some type of mental disorder, probably related to her MPD.
