yes to cloned tissue | Creating a human embryo by cloning to provide
tissue for transplants should be allowed, say the British government's
advisers on genetics and reproduction. This would require a change in the
law. The advice appeared this week in a report by the Human Fertilization
and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and the Human Genetics Advisory Commission,
which also says reproduction by cloning should remain banned. "What's on
the agenda now is cloning of tissues and cells," says Anne McLaren of the
Wellcome-Cancer Research Campaign Institute in Cambridge, a member of the
HFEA. Embryos created for this purpose would not be allowed to develop
for more than 14 days.
