Note Re: News
Group Protocol:
Most files on the Web are in http:// format
which is "hypertext transfer protocol". Newsgroups have their own
format which is news: This format must be followed by a news server
address e.g. news:news.mydomain.net or news:news.alpha.net
then
the newsgroups addresses below can be added to the rest
above and only then the hyperlinks below will work. (The news server
address is generally provided by your internet service provider (ISP) and
requires paid-for access to get into.) |
Excellent,
A+ newsgroups
(my favorites - worth checking
daily)
-
alt.bio.technology.cloning
Does an equally intelligent dialogue about cloning in particular with an
eye towards human cloning. Read the charter
and FAQs for it first.
-
sci.cryonics This is a very well informed
and articulate group of cryogenics and cryonics enthusiasts. It appears
to be the only such discussion group on Usenet. Its FAQs
are online.
-
sci.nanotech This moderated news group
discussed both technical and reasonable speculation about nanotechnology,
the science of molecular manufacturing. The archives
and FAQs for
the group are available.
Above
Average, B newsgroups
(my second favorites - worth
checking weekly)
-
sci.life-extension This group can
include cloning at times but focuses on more immediate and conventional
methods of maintaining health into old age.
-
sci.bio.technology A broader coverage
of developments in genetic engineering, IVF and cloning as well. One can
find very intelligent discussions here.
-
sci.bio.evolution I like this group
because it has very smart and insightful discussion of the Big Picture
in biology. This larger perspective is a useful vantage point from
which to view recent developments in biotechnology , IVF and fertility
research.alt.sci.physics.new-theories
Sort of like sci.bio.evolution, this
is Big Picture group for physics with a panoramic perspective. It would
be especially good for those who have a familiarity with theoretical astrophysics
in general and quantum mechanics and general relativity in particular.
-
misc.health.infertility The
participants here are generally infertile individuals or couples seeking
information and alternatives on this issue. It does focus on the
clinical applications of IVF and fertility research and thus in of some
interest to the futurist, extropian or transhumanist

Average,
C newsgroups
(worth checking monthly)
-
alt.cloning Though the title sounds promising,
there are only a few good posts here. The group seems to have been
taken over by a few quasi-neurotic, conspiratorially minded people
-
alt.cloned-sheep.bah.bah.bah
As you might expect, this is a small group of people not to be taken seriously.
even the title is tougue-in-cheek.
-
alt.immortal I found this site to
be mostly spam messages, just junk e-mail
-
alt.extropians Just like alt.immortal,
this is a spam-filled site to see.
-
alt.neo-tech A group similar to alt.cloning.
Their major web site is considerably
better because the web site has many long, informative articles about this
neo-tech movement that is analogous to extropy and transhumanism
-
bit.listserv.xtropy-1 Again this
is a fairly inactive group with mostly spam mail to wade through.
-
misc.health.alternative This
group is focused mostly on nontraditional non-allopathic medicinal alternatives
which have little to do with the Futurist Think
Tank Vision or that of related groups like extropians or transhumanists.
