PowerLifting Page
PowerLifting is a sport where participants compete to see who has the greatest physical strength. Strength is measured in three events, the Bench Press which almost everyone knows, the Squat and the Deadlift.
The Bench Press consists of laying on a long, narrow bench and bringing a weighted bar from arm's length to the chest and
back out to arm's length.
The Squat consists of placing a loaded bar on the back
of one's shoulders and descending to a position where one's upper legs are parallelto the floor and returning to a standing position.
The Deadlift, my favorite of all simply involves grabbing a loaded bar laying on the floor and standing up with it.
This may seem easy, technically and otherwise but it really is quite complicated and when you get to the heavy weights makes your eyes feel like they're gonna pop out.
Powerlifting is open to competitors of all ages, people from teens to those in their 80's can and do compete. It has carry over to the real world in that the leg, lower back, and upper body strength it creates comes in useful everyday. Also many powerlifters will tell you that although all athletes are competing to win, there is a certain sense of comradery at meets,
other powerlifters will clap and shout support for you as you lift, the same people who you are competing against will often root for you!
PowerLifting should not be confused with bodybuilding. The objective is full body strength and not size. Powerlifters do appear muscular, however they are almost never as large as the freaks you will see in bodybuilding mags. The closest popular example of powerlifting is olympic weightlifting.
