2003
This was my fifth year as a Conference Associate (i.e., volunteer) at the GDC. I tried to meet more people and to build friendships that will be active more than just once a year. I have a great time every year, but this year was the best. Thus, it was also the saddest. I desperately hope we'll keep in touch with the friends we made.
(Note: I forgot--or didn't know--some names. If you can fix something amiss, please tell me.)

Amy Unger |
Barbara Brengle, aka "Mom" |
Ben Scott |
Bill Robinson. Bill and I got along very well. Here he reminds me of a big teddy bear, or a sleeping giant. |
He's awake! Run! R-U-N! |
Brian Bradshaw. We played "Strikers 1945" at the SJSU arcade. |
Bryce Nakagawa making a funny face |
Chas Harmon. We drove to the GDC in Chas' van, which reminded me of the Mystery Machine from "Scooby-Doo." |
Dave Robison. He likes Bogart movies. |
Don-Duong Quach |
Ian Martin |
Josh Zisserson |
Nur Monson. Turns out we both are from Sacramento, and his ex-roommate in college is the brother of an old high school friend of mine. |
Allen Sun. The guy with the red hair is Mike Skipper. |
Rob Lupo, Super Floater. |
Scott Moore, Super Floater. From my experience at the GDC, Scott's as cool as liquid nitrogen in a crisis. The CA at left appears to be having a very pleasant thought. |
Sara Michael |
CA Tony competed in one of the Unreal tournaments that Intel had. He was in the lead with a minute and a half left... |
...unfortunately, he lost at the last millisecond. Really, it was the closest match I've ever seen. Tony was robbed! |
A whole lotta CAs. Beach ball in upper-left quadrant. |
Lunch badgers mean business. L to R: Nur Monson, Xander Peterson, Ben Scott |
Marshall Brengle (right) and Phillip Ayer. Technically, it sounded just okay. But it was very, well, real. |
Demo of how they did the Ents in "The Two Towers." |
Andy Serkis = Gollum |
A CG outtake of Gollum from "The Two Towers" |
Stand-in for Gollum. The actor who played Gollum, Andy Serkis, can be partly seen behind Kermit. |
King Theoden enjoys being part of an outtake in "The Two Towers." |
The setup: Nvidia gave away a high-end graphics card to the best twenty-minute drawing. The catch: You had to be a real artist, and you had to include the Nvidia logo in the drawing. The wheel indicates the theme for each round. |
Miriam "Mimsy" Sherry (center) reacts to the thunderous applause from the crowd. To Mimsy's right is SJ Chen. |
Mimsy proudly displays her newly won, well-deserved graphics card. |
Mimsy drew this! |
A competing entry in the round Mimsy was in. |
Some more of Mimsy's competition. |
Another entry in Mimsy's round. |
There was an unsurprising number of entries like this one. |
Mimsy is unstoppable... |
...and she knows how to have fun! |
Chas also competed for a graphics card. |
Some of best past entries were on the walls. |
I really like this drawing. Especially for it's clever use of "PALM COURT" backwards. |

Some entries just included the Nvidia logo generically. This one does a bit better. |
Mastercard narrator: "Top-of-the-line Nvidia card: $1000. Real cost to company: $300. A new, unstoppable logo: Priceless." | |
If you went to the Programmer's Challenge you'd understand just how funny this is! |
These innocent-looking people are trying to decide whom to BURN AT THE STAKE! Don't trust anyone--it's Witch Hunt! In the background, Bill Robinson tells a fish story. |
Prayer time at the GDC--I wish! Instead, there will soon be a murder in the middle of the night, and in the morning a hapless villager will be burned at the stake. It's Witch Hunt! |
Here, innocent Rodney Fleig has just been lynched. Unfortunately, Dan Silveira (partly off-screen right) tried to intervene by revealing he's the Prophet. BUT, he was too late... |
.... The witches kill Dan at night. No one noticed he was pointing at Cheryl Platz and Amy. Another innocent villager gets lynched the next day. Game over. If Dan had just been a little faster, the entire village could have been saved.... |
Spot the witch(es). |
It really does look like a prayer or meditation circle. What is Russ Fan counting? |
Bingo! It's Scott Moore and Bruce Harlick! |
Pat Magnan unwittingly votes off a fellow villager. Note that Bruce is a witch, but he's not voting. Very sneaky, Bruce. |
Chris "Bix" Marshall has the attention of the village. But does that mean he'll be the next target? |
Xander Peterson, younger than he looks. The expression on his face may be horror, as he has been caught on tape playing "Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball"! |
If you look just at Xander's head, it almost looks like I pasted him in with Photoshop. But, no, his attention really is diverted as two hooligans steal lunches behind his back. |
Xander wants to play Dance Dance Revolution, despite having a huge hump on his back. |
Xander's pretty good at DDR... |
...he doesn't even have to watch the screen sometimes... |
...in fact, Xander's so good he can levitate by taking advantage of magnets hidden in the DDR control platform. |
