This page outlines my scientific research being carried out at the Urban Economy Chair. The subject matter of the research is a comparison of traffic flows organising schemes at urban highway junctions based on the air pollution criterion. There are many different ways of reducing air pollution caused by intensive traffic in megapolices. Urban planning offers its own approach to solving this urgent problem. It has become a common place that a vehicle emits most of toxic compounds at non-uniform movement modes (acceleration, deceleration). That is why improvement of movement conditions at highway junctions is an effective and relatively inexpensive way to make urban air cleaner. In the first part of the research there was developed a system for modelling traffic flows movement and determining modes of engines of vehicles in these flows. That allows calculating the amount of toxic compounds emitted by vehicular flows generally at the junction and particularly at any point of it. Within the second part, which is currently in progress, there will be analysed different movement organising schemes (such as simple signalised intersection, "clover leaf", roundabout and so on). As it could be predicted and as the preliminary modelling results show, the improved grade-separated schemes become more effective by growing traffic intensity and share of turning vehicles.

I have written several articles concerning this subject. Their titles and abstracts are given below.

The Traffic Intensity Distribution on Highway Traffic Lines at Cloverleaf Junctions. The article elucidates regularity of vehicle distribution on highway traffic lines. It treats the distribution at cloverleaf junctions. This problem is not as widely studied as the distribution on a span between crossings. A regressional equation was obtained as a result of the author's observations at junctions in Kyiv. This equation is purposed primarily for calculating a share of delayed vehicles and duration of their delay while the secondary traffic flow is joining the primary one. The Environmental Effect Assessment of Grade-Separated Intersections Established for the Purpose of a Level Intersection Reconstruction. The subject of the article is the environmental effect of reconstructing a signalised intersection with establishing clover-leaf-shaped grade-separated intersection. Both of the schemes are analysed in different traffic conditions. The three factors influencing emission intensity of harmful compounds are scrutinised: traffic intensity, a share of the leftward flow and a share of the rightward flow.

Simple applet below is a small part of my system rewritten in Java. It can calculate the amount of toxic emissions of uniformly moving vehicle in different road conditions. The "Length" field specifies the span on which vehicle movement will be modelled. The value in the "Gradient" field is a fractional representing the gradient at the beginning of a vertical curve or the simple gradient at a non-curved span. "Vertical radius" is the radius of a vertical curve or zero at a non-curved span. The "Load" field specifies a share of vehicle carrying capacity used.
