The existing network of the Walnut Shipping Company currently consist of three small token ring networks and a couple of mainframes. In order to make the intranet effective many components are going to have to be added to the networks of the corporate headquarters and the two branch offices.
First we will start with the corporate headquarters in Atlanta that has three token ring LANs. These token ring LANs need to be connected to bridges and the bridges are going to need to be connected to switches. Also there should be ethernet LANs established in the rest of the departments. These computers connected to these LANs will be the usual 200 mhz processor, 64 MB of RAM, and Windows NT. The browser that will be installed on these computers will be Internet Explorer 4.0. The LANs that these computers will be hooked to will be connected to each other using a bridge. Connected to these bridges will be three NT servers, one server will be the web server dedicated for the internet, one will be set up as a database server, and the other one will be set up as the intranet web server. Also connected in each location will be a firewall to provide security for the network.
In both of the branch offices we will be building completely new networks. As in the corporate branch each department will be on its own separate LAN. Each department will be built an ethernet LAN. All the computers on these LANs will be the standard computers listed in the above paragraph. All of these LANs will be bridged together and connected to a router which will connected to a WAN which will connect all of the branch offices and corporate offices together.
To maintain the network a support staff will be hired for each of the three sites. This staff will consist of a help desk, a network administrator, and several people to maintain and trouble shoot the physical network. The help desk will be the staff to contact in the event that employees are having any problems with there computers. The network administrator's job is to support the network by providing users with installed programs and also maintaining network security. Finally the rest of this staff will be dedicated in keeping the network running.
