The Heads of Cerebrus

In your dream you see three statues of a beast. You see three separate statues of the same beast. Two of the statues stand on either side of a path as if guarding it. One has its mouth open. One has its mouth closed. The third is in the center of the path. The third statue is poised as if to strike and is bearing its teeth.

A voice speaks. She says,

" My name is Cerebrus,"
" See the three statues of me,"
" Each of the statues has a head,"
" The three heads of Cerebrus,"

She continues speaking,

" There is a fourth head of Cerebrus,"
" The fourth head is my maidenhead,"
" And though I am fierce I cannot always defend it,"
" But now I tell you that there is a fifth head,"
" The fifth head of Cerebrus is you."

Hush! Turn off all of your noise and listen,
Listen closely, cars, people, pets, the hum of electronic equipment,
We never get to experience silence during our waking hours,
Even in the most quiet areas there is noise,
Our minds carry along all sorts of clutter, internal noise,
Only during sleep can we know true silence,
Then you must listen closely, in the midst of that silence,
If you listen carefully, you may catch the barest glimpse,
For a brief moment you might here some of the deafening roar,
The mighty cacophony,
That exists just on the other side of the that silence.

You walk between the two heads of Cerebrus and past the third head. You Follow the sidewalk up to a building, a mansion. You open the door to the mansion and enter. The floor has a checker-board pattern. You are in a big room. The walls of the room are lined with doors. The doors are all locked.

As you examine the doors the room slowly becomes a long hallway, a long dark threadbare hallway.

Light bulb hanging from the ceiling.

Dingy carpet. Noises, bad noises. The smell.

You stop at one of the doors and insert your key.

As you begin to open the door you feel fear. Cerebrus senses your fear and amplifies it. She speaks,

" What is it that you fear most,"
" You needn’t say it,"
" I know what it is that you fear,"
" And it is that dreadful thing that I have placed behind the door,"
" Open the door."

With fear you open the door, and confront a part of yourself.
