Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay

and Day of Service Project

Fifth grade students will use their Computer Studies time to research and collect facts about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Specifically, students will be looking for facts to help them write about why Dr. King would have thought it was important to serve the community on a day commemorating his life. Additionally, students will learn how the power of speech can make a difference and shine a light on social injustice.

There will be a collection of library books for students to use, as well as the following Web resources:

Some questions that students should try to answer as they collect facts for their essays are:

·        Who was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?

·        Why did Dr. King think that helping other people was important?

·        What did Dr. King do to help other people?

·        Why is it important that we honor Dr. King with a day of service on MLK Day?

Student essays must start with a proper header and have three well-written paragraphs. Students must save their essays to their HOME DIRECTORY, 5th grade folder. Students must e-mail their essays to Mr. Brown by January 18, 2008 for credit. Students must also follow the format for the essay, which can be found by clicking the following link:
