Chapter 1

KidPix picture by Daniel H.

Linda's life was kind of like ours because she enjoyed having fun. Her life was different than our because she lived next to a train yard, which she would walk past on her way to school. One of the men at the train yard was as jolly as Santa Claus, and used to tease Linda and her sister by calling them "boys." The girls would call him "Mary."

Above are pictures of boxcars coming into the town of Topeka, Kansas. The Brown girls liked being next to the railroad because when the showcars came, they would be the first to know that the fair was in town.

Group members: Michael B., Tate, Ryan, & Alex M.

Mr. Brown worked as a welder fixing boxcars on the railroad, and would take a nap at home after a long day at work. After his nap, Mr. Brown and the family would come together for dinner.

Group members: Charles S., Chris M., Matt S., and Sachin P.

On the left there is a picture of three girls praying at bedtime. "Each night Mr. Brown would listen to to the girls' bedtime prayers." On the right there is a picture of a church. On Sundays, the family went to Sunday school and church, where Mr. Brown was an assistant pastor.

Chapter 2

KidPix picture by Alex B.

Linda Brown went to Monroe School, which was one mile away from her home. Linda walked between the train tracks and through the switching yard to the bus stop. She refused to walk outside the train tracks because there was no sidewalk on the street, and the street was very busy.

Group Members: Josh B., Alex B., Ian P., Daniel H., and Kyle K.

KidPix picture by Thomas I.

This picture shows Linda Brown waiting for the bus. Unfortunately, in order to get to the bus stop, she had to walk along the railroad, often in cold and rainy weather.

Group members: Thomas I., Nick D., Gray H., & Creighton.

KidPix picture by Matt S.

When Linda was ready to start 3rd grade, her father said he would walk her to school on the first day. They walked the opposite way from the train tracks for about 3 blocks. They reached a school that was lighter and prettier than the Monroe School. The school had a little tower on one end with weather vane on top.

Group members: Christopher M., Charles, Taylor, and Matt S.

KidPix picture by Connell & Hunter

In the picture above, Linda Brown is waiting outside while her dad is talking to the principal of the Sumner School. The principal tells Mr. Brown that his daughter can not go to the Sumner School because she is black.

Group members: Connell, Rameen, Hunter, and Chris M.
