Houli note: an additional study done in January, 1999 for Basketball America shows that all players recruited by Indiana, for NCAA graduation years 98, 97. 96, and 95 are staying with Indiana and graduating at an 87% rate. -All players leaving for the NBA have subsequently graduated.
-Many transfers left for schools where it was mutually felt that a better playing opportunity existed elsewhere.
-Some players left for pro basketball or transfered to other programs for philosophical differences in teaching and leadership methods performed by Coach Knight.

Comparing Knight's Indiana departure rate and graduation rate with other programs will show favorable results. Coach Knight states while addressing the student body 9-99, "We've given 117 scholarships since I've been at Indiana for 28 years, and of that 117, 37 kids for one reason or another have left. Eighty have stayed and played all four years. That's about 30 percent that we've lost.

"The national average is about 38 percent. That is never mentioned when somebody talks about a kid leaving Indiana. Not only are we not near the bottom, we are well into the upper half of schools relative to retaining scholarship players."

Finally, my effort is to provide an objective, fact filled analysis. In review of the 1999 departures and transfers, schools like Kentucky, Duke and Ohio State are each losing multiple underclassmen. Coaches continually tend to offers from other schools at the major college level, often departing for a better pesonal circumstance, leaving the kids they recruited with empty promises.

At Indiana under Knight, the promise and commitment made, is the promise and commitment kept. This promise is to the player, his parent(s), the falculty, the administration, and the fan. The promise is not in agreement with all the media (as the promise is not to the media), thus the slanted and opiniated stone throwing at the Indiana program by some members of the media. Lay all the facts on the table, and let the fans decide for themselves. And to think that the stones are often being thrown by supposed devote Christians? -- Houli
