Obituary of John Mee, died June 7, 2004 -- found by CJE

John William Mee, 67, of Ajijic, in the Sierra Madre of western Mexico, died Monday, June 7, at home in Ajijic after a long illness. The son of William Robert Mee and Ellen Frances Pickley, he was born November 10, 1936 in Endicott, N.Y. Mr. Mee was a 1954 graduate of Union-Endicott High School and was awarded an SB in Mathematics by Fordham College in 1958. After serving with U.S. Army Counterintelligence in Germany, Mr. Mee earned an MS in Mathematics from Fordham University, and subsequently, a master's degree in Education from SUNY Albany and certification as principal and chief school officer. Mr. Mee, a distance runner in high school and a forward on Fordham's varsity soccer team, taught Mathematics and coached soccer at The Storm King School, a prep school for boys in Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., from 1960 until 1963, when he joined the faculty of Newburgh Free Academy, Newburgh, N.Y. After several years of teaching, he became as assistant principal at NFA, then vice-principal. A few years later, he was appointed principal of his own school, North Junior High in Newburgh, where he served until his retirement in 1994. Among his achievements at North High were the institution of an honors program based in part on the study of Latin and a sharp reduction in truancy and drug use by a student body caught in a deteriorating urban environment. The success of his efforts can be judged in part by the students from more prosperous suburbs who paid tuition to study at North High in preference to their own schools. He was especially proud that both the attendance and the grades of North High students improved during every year of his tenure. Upon returning to Mexico, Mr. Mee was a member of the Lake Chapala Society and director of its active Book Club, which met each Tuesday at his home. Casamee, at the corner of Paseo de las Olas and El Camino Real in La Floresta, was frequently the site of large receptions and dinner parties in the Lakeside community. On each Fourth of July, as many as 50 friends and neighbors gathered there for a fiesta, which included Mr. Mee's reading of the Declaration of Independence, followed by a fireworks display.

Mr. Mee is survived by his wife, the former Martha J. Ochse, Ajijic; four children by a previous marriage, John Andrew Mee, Washington, D.C., Jennifer Morris and Mary Jane Cibik, both of Atlanta, Ga., Christopher Mee, Highland Mills, N.Y.; and a brother, Mike Mee, of Endicott and Cambridge, Mass. Mr. Mee's first marriage, to Gail Catherine Cluff, of Newfoundland, N.J., in 1961, ended in divorce. He is also survived by Mrs. Mee's two daughters by a previous marriage, Joanna Giddings, Old Greenwich, Conn., and Dr. Virginia Symons, Mountain View, Calif. Joanna, Virginia, and Virginia's husband, the eternally resourceful Billy Symons, as well as their daughter Samantha, two years old, were of inestimable help and support in Mr. Mee's final days. He is also survived by the memories of those friends whose lives he touched during his years in Ajijic. Memorial services are to be held on Saturday, June 12, at St. Andrew's, Ajijic, where he will be interred. A second service is to arranged at St. Patrick's Church in Central Valley, N.Y.
