Membership
Eligible for one of the various grades of membership are those involved in Engineering, Management, Planning, Research, Design and Development, Manufacture, Equipment, Test, Installation, Modification, Repair and Maintenance, Staff Training and Quality Assurance for Heavy, Intermediate, and Light Electric Rail systems, Underground and Elevated Electric Rail systems, Rack and Funicular railways, Tramways and 'Super Tramways' and Monorails. Eligible also are those similarly connected with two forms of Electrified public transport, which although not rail guided, share much also in common with electric railways, namely, Trolley Buses and Magnetically Levitated Vehicles.
Written enquiries from prospective members are welcomed, and should
be addressed to:
The Secretary, IIREE,

MEMBERSHIP GRADES AND DESIGNATIONS
(Part 1)
This page provides information on Membership grades, and is primarily intended for those who may be contemplating joining the Institute, and for those already within the Institute, who are seeking to move to a higher membership grade as soon as they are entitled to do so. The criteria for the various Honorary grades are detailed in Part 2, and for Corporate Membership in Part 3.
Associate (Assoc. IIREE) Someone who has
an active interest in electric railways, tramways or other electric public
transport systems, but no professional involvement, and who is not participating
in any of the forms of training listed as qualifying for Student Membership
(Associates are not entitled to vote at Institute meetings or in Institute
elections).
Student Member (SIIREE) Should
hold an engineering apprenticeship or be in a recognised engineering training
scheme in an organisation which is connected with electric railways, tramways,
or other electric public transport modes, OR should be enrolled
in a course of study leading to a first degree in engineering or science,
OR should be enrolled in a course of study at an establishment
of further education leading to a diploma in engineering technology,
OR should be participating in the Institute's training scheme
leading to a pass in the Institute's examinations.
Junior Member (JMIIREE) Should
have successfully completed any one of the training schemes listed for Student
Membership and be gaining experience within the electric public transport
industry.
Member (MIIREE) Should have graduated
with a degree in physics, electronics, or electrical engineering and have
worked within the electric railway industry for a minimum of 2 years,
OR have obtained a diploma in electro-technology and have
worked within the electric railroad industry for a minimum of 5 years
OR have worked in a technical capacity within the electric
railway industry for at least 8 years, of which period at least 2 years should
have been in a position of responsibility, OR should have been
a Junior Member for at least 5 years.
Senior Member (SMIIREE) Should hold
a Master's degree or a Doctorate in physics, electronics or electrical
engineering, and have worked in the electric railroad industry, or in a
university faculty of technology or railway engineering studies for a minimum
of 2 years, OR should have graduated with a degree
in physics, electronics, or electrical engineering, and have worked
within the electric railway industry for a minimum of 6 years,
OR should have obtained a diploma in electro-technology
and have worked within the electric railroad industry for a minimum
of 10 years, OR should have worked in a technical capacity
within the electric railway industry for at least 12 years, of which period
at least 2 years should have been in a position of senior responsibility,
OR should have been a Member for at least
5 years.
Fellow (FIIREE) Should be an assistant
Professor or a Professor of a University faculty of technology or
of railway engineering studies, or an Academician in an Academy of Science,
with an equivalent field of interest, OR should have any one
of the groups of qualifications for the Senior Member grade, with the proviso
that the work experience called for is increased by 50% compared with th
Senior Member requirements, OR should have worked within the
electric railroad industry for at least 12 years, with 2 years in a position
of senior responsibility, and in addition, in the judgement of
the Institute's Qualifications Board, has made a unique, innovative
contribution to electric railway engineering, or has performed outstanding
services to the Institute itself (it being understood that where this unique
contribution to electric railroad technology or the outstanding services
to the Institute are clearly apparent, but the 12 years' work experience
requirement cannot be met, the Qualifications Board may in exceptional
circumstances substitute a lesser time period).
Affiliate Member (AMIIREE) Should
have, at least, qualifications equal to the normal Member grade,. But whereas
th normal Member grade is only open to individuals in the rail, tramway and
other electric transport industries, this Affiliate Member grade is for
professionals in other engineering or scientific disciplines which have a
connection with, or make a contribution to, electric railway or tramway etc.
systems. Examples include Civil Engineering applied to railroads, Materials
technology applied to railroads, Aerodynamics applied to high speed rail
vehicles, Radio communications and radar in railway applications, and so
forth. Candidates would be expected to cite examples of their
railway-related work.
There is also a Senior Affiliate Member grade, and an
Affiliate Fellow grade, with entrance requirements broadly equivalent to
the Senior Member and Fellow grades, in the same way as with Affiliate Member
grade is to the Member grade.
This is the Web-page version of Part 1, Leaflet M.46,
for Professional Grades of Membership. Honorary Grades are described
in Part 2, Leaflet M.47, and Corporate Membership in Part 3, Leaflet
M.48. All these Leaflets are available upon application to our Head
Office.
