Every great work of art or architecture has two components: A patron and an artist. Lofty? Perhaps, but I believe it to be absolute truth if you consider the works deemed "masterpiece" by both critic and common citizen. Over the last 14 years, I've encountered many parasites, but few patrons. My criticism of the 21st century 'patron' is arguably hypocritical as my assertion as artist is not flawless... I have worked for the parasites more than I would like to remember. Perhaps, one day, a patron will be revealed and I will get a chance to test my hypothesis. Until then... I will seek and continue to believe. In the absence of client as patron, I have often served an unexpected patron, my peers. When I look back at endeavors I believe to be a success, I've come to realize that more often than not, they have been the result of assisting fellow architects to craft 'their' patrons dreams with my computer technology skills. Not since the invention of perspective drawing in the renaissance have patrons had such powerful tools available to visualize their dreams than the opportunities offered by the advances computer technology. How can I be so sure of my successes? Because each provided moments of pure, absolute, unadulterated joy at multiple points from conception to completion. They were not without challenges, but when the smoke cleared, the process and result were worthwhile, if not always lasting. To now, that is where my practice resides . . . I believe it can be more... Peers appreciated. Patrons wanted. |
