What are shola forests? What makes it so special? Well, Shola forests are unique montane vegitations occupying temperate habitats in tropical latitudes and considered as relictual communities. The shola forests comprises of subtropical hill forests and montane temperate forests generally found above 1500m msl they are high altitude gallery forests restricted to valleys, depressions and especially along folds of hills and water courses. They are small patches of forests found in matrix of grassland.

The Nilgiri thar
Out of a few endangered species of animals The Nilgiri Thar (called varai addu by the locals) is found in the grasslands adjoining the shola forests. Nilgiri tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius) is an mountain ungulate endemic to the Western Ghats in South India. The Nilgiri Thar is protected by the government, and can be seeen at The Eravikulam National park (Munnar division).
