First off, I do em using my head. And I'm presuming that you know how to do windmills damn good now, because if not you better keep practicing before you try these. Also, you've gotta get some sort of speed when doing these, I do a couple normal mills then I try for the nutcrackers, but people have their own ways, you can bust em when you very first start off. I'm gonna explain as if you were on your back from a windmill and your hands are on/over your crotch and you are ready to go for the nutcracker (off of you forehead). This is for CCW (counter clockwise). One last thing, when I try any move I try to think of my body as one whole piece, stiffen it up so when you make your body go in a certain direction the whole thing will go. How bout this, imagine a wish bone ok, ok, now your legs are the sides of the wish bone (you know, the sides you grab on when you make the wish) and the little stick part in the middle is your spine, or just your torso, now if you twist that little stick part the two little legs move as one because they are stiff, get it??? I hope so, I'm tired, it's 2:00am while i'm writing this so it might seem unclear or like i'm rambling.
Ok. First your LEFT leg must kick higher up, and as you are rolling over your head has got to be closer to the ground, lean it to the side, as if you wanted to put your head on your shoulder. Now push off with your RIGHT elbow, it has to be a slight push, practice it so it becomes natural, that shoulder is there to give your body the air and to set your head on the floor so you don't smash your face. Now as you are coming up you've gotta face your head down so that you roll off of your forehead, look down. I keep my neck stiff, but sometimes i don't put my head down right or don't face my head down and I end up rolling off of my face. Now you should be only on your forehead, now imagine your legs and hips are going higher than the rest of your body, (you must visualize yourself doing these things before you can do em) so that way your whole body is at an angle with your head being the vertex (or the lowest point of all, I am aware that that's not what a vertex is) Now in this instant of being only on your forehead, kick/pull your RIGHT leg up so that way your left leg and rest of the body swing under. But it won't swing automatically, so you've gotta use some sort of body muscle to force it under. The leg lift will let your LEFT leg swing under easier, but you've gotta lift it high and hang it up there so that your shouler won't hit. Personally when I was learning these I didn't think of the LEFT shoulder swinging/whipping under, I think of the RIGHT shoulder swinging over and the LEFT side of the body being the pivot side. Also, since I try rollerblading, I do all those 360's and 540's (spins in the air in degrees of spin) so knew how to control my body to spin a little better. Now that your body should've rolled all the way through and you are on your back again, turn your whole body real fast, like the wish bone thing. To do another one. I hope this somewhat cleared it up.
One last thing, if you tend to lose speed try to use your hips to make your legs spin faster, roll faster with your upper body. Also, if you don't wanna use your head, when you are coming around you gotta kick up with your LEFT leg push off with your RIGHT elbow, spin your torso real fast and kick up your right leg.
