EARTHQUAKE INELASTIC DEFORMATION |
GENERAL NOTES
Structural Engineering Background Al Whitecar designed and developed many state-of-the-art seismic systems and structural systems for many medium - high end projects at Forell, Elsesser Engineers for 19 years. Web Site's purpose The purpose of this Web Site is to provide some level of performance based design information for the state-of-the-art earthquake engineering as well as defining Al's structural engineering philosophy. |

Al's preferred engineering professional direction
First, Al is interested in helping solve the following problem: There is a serious lack of public awareness about earthquake engineering. Most people think buildings are being seismically upgraded or built new as being made "earthquake proof". In reality, most buildings are being upgraded to a level just above the collapse level (the typical code design) and not to the level the public perceives as earthquake proof. The structural engineering profession rarely publicly discusses the expected earthquake damage to the public nor do they tell their clients about the expected earthquake damage of the structural elements or the non-structural elements in their buildings. There needs to be some good structural engineer or engineers who provides earthquake information to the public, acting as an public relations structural engineer. This person needs to the middle man to explain earthquake engineering to the public and also guide the structural engineers to what the public wants. He must be respected by his peers and trustworthy to the media and to the public. So when the next big earthquake hits and hundreds of people are killed, there will be no big uproar and the finger will not pointed to the Structural Engineers of California. Al's engineering expertise If Al is going to stay in structural design than it should be in an consulting structural engineering environment; here are his qualifications; Pre-design concepts - Working with the Architects to provide the owner with a building that will perform seismically instead of trying to make an architectural design work seismically. Concept designs - provide a more in-depth design of the building Drawing layouts - provide a complete drawing layout for contract documents Engineering staff instruction's - instructing young engineers how to do and master the art of calculations and explain design concepts for calculations Engineering analysis - develop and provide state-of the art computer modeling Detailing of structural systems - provide complete structural details and information for the contract documents Third, Al is interested doing web site development for Architects and Engineers. For structural engineering consulting services, employment oppuntunities or inquiries, go to the contact page. |

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Al is registered civil and structural engineer in the state of California and resides in San Rafael - Marin County. He is a member of SEAONC and has been active in the writing of the western states structural exam from 1988 to the 1997. The exam is now the California structural exam and he is still somewhat active in the writing of the exam. |
