This is How These Battles Work...
Step . . . 1
Once you have "received your license" you may challenge someone on the trainers list to a Pokemon battle.  When you e-mail him/her, don't forget to make sure that they know what you're e-mailing them about, and who you are for that matter.  You also need to ask someone to ref the match.  The ref is someone who decides when/which attacks miss and hit.  The ref also calculates how much damage is dealt by an attack.  Once the three of you have agreed to battle it's just a matter of starting, which is all up to you and your group.  If there are any problems, e-mail me and I'll try my best to settle the situation in dispute.
Step . . . 2
Then you and your opponent tell your ref the Pokemon you've have chosen to battle with, and each of their chosen attacks.  This information is best kept secret.
Remember, you will not know what pokemon your opponent has selected until you fight them.  So you should generally try to make a well-rounded mix of element types if possible.
After telling your ref what Pokemon you're using, you then tell him/her which you have selected to be the first one you send out.  The reason for this is so that people can't cheat and say they accidentally sent out one Pokemon (that happens to be weak to their opponent's) but "meant" to say another.  You get the idea.
Step . . . 3
These are standards for all battles.
There 3 steps to each turn: pre-attack, attack, and post-attack.
Sleep lasts for 1-5 turns, and wakes up only DURING its attack step so it won't get to attack.
When Pokemon are switched, the switch is in the pre-attack step.
(but may not attack that turn)
Seed, poison, and burn damage is taken in the post-attack step.
As logic dictates, the Pokemon with the higher speed goes first in the attack step of the turn.
Note: if the (faster) Pokemon knocks out the other, it effecitvely ends the turn during the attack step, so if it is poisoned, burned, or seeded it will not take any damage from it as usual.  Also note that recoil damage is part of an attack's effect (thus occurs during the attack step), so it IS possible for both Pokemon to be knocked out at the same time.
All Pokemon are assumed Level 100 with all Max stats (at least, for now...)
No potions or items of any sort exist.
Sorry.
Uiru's Pokemon Database
You MUST be familliar with this site to battle, this is where  you will find Pokemon's stats, and equally importantly, the battle formula and attack pages.  Another point that is essential, a Pokemon is not allowed to use any moves it would not normally learn either on its own, via TM, or in Gold/Silver, those are currently the only move restrictions.
If there is anything else that you don't know, please re-refer to Uiru's Pokemon Database, and if you haven't played before, you need to have actually played the actual GameBoy game before you can battle here.

Well, you don't HAVE to, but nobody wants to explain how the game is played.  It's just a lot easier on everyone.
