As you can tell I'm not a fan of Mickey$oft at all. I'll give
you a little information as to why not. Not in any particular order:
-
1. Plug & Play (Pray)
This became a standard in windows 95 & is now found in all other versions.
The idea is supposed to be that you install (copy) the driver & software
to your computer first THEN plug in (install) the hardware; next Windoze is
supposed to notice the hardware & update itself with the driver information.
It's a pretty nice concept. However with 98, for example, if you install the
hardware windows will then ask for a Disk or path to where it can find the driver
you wish to install so you don't HAVE to HAVE the software installed first.
Many times many people I've known including myself have had problems with this
idea. As I said, the concept is a good one NOW if it just worked right more
than 50% of the time.
The Amiga doesn't use drivers like windoze does. The Amiga uses mount scripts
& relies on the file system in use to read/read/handle data. You're able
to freely remove software at any time & AmigaDOS/Workbench won't go looking
for every time the hardware is left in place. This can be a very nice thing.
- Paths / Filenames
/ Comments
Pre-Windows 95: All you had was the filename limition. What's that? It is
the goof known as the 8.3 limitation. In example: "FILENAME" is 8 characters.
"EXE" or "DOC" or "TXT", you get the idea, are 3 characters. Thus the 8.3
filename limition.
Windows 95, Windows NT & so on: they have the same limitions but have
added work-arounds so that Windoze can SEEM to have LONG filenames which in
Reality they do NOT. Want proof? Look at a Micro$oft DOS prompt & type
"dir" then press the return key. You'll see filenames like "FILENA~1".
The 1 means there's 1 file with that name, if there were 2 filenames that
had the starting "FILENAME" in it then it would have "FILENA~2".
The "~" is just a seperator. They have made LINKS to the filename
which shows to the RIGHT of the dates. Thus, windoze does NOT really have
LONG FILENAMES. The Amiga does. With windows you can't even Comment a file.
See what you think about this:
Shape Shifter3.9.LZX 234997 ---arwed 14-Jan-98 17:20:39 Macintosh emulator
allowing multitasking.
In order: Filename, File size in Bytes (30 Characters), Protection Bits/Flags,
Date Stamp, Time Stamp, & the Comment (30 Characters). WHO NEEDS MORE
THAN 30 CHARACTERS, Realistically?? By the way, ALL of the Above is REAL &
since 1985. This is only TOUCHING it... :) The AMIGA was made with a vision,
IBM Clones & Micro$oft was too, it's name is evil.
- GUI Look
Now I'll talk about Clone's GUI (Graphic User Interface). In case you didn't
know the GUI is the thing with Icons on it (Hence: Workbench & Windows). Ever
noticed how most Pentiums have the same look to them? Walk into a Store or
someones home who has Windows or another Clone GUI, perhaps the Icons are
arranged differently but the General LOOK is the same. You can't change it...except
for a the Backdrop. Oh BOY!
With the AMIGA, we're able to change the entire look of the GUI & Icons as
well as our backdrops. We can even make our AMIGAs look like Win95...(Haha,
yeah, like I'd want my AMIGA to look like crap). We can also make our AMIGAs
look like Macs, OR like AMIGAs/Windows/Macs all in one. I've done all of them
JUST to see it.
- Formatting A Floppy
Better make sure you have ALL of the files Copied from the disk before you
FORMAT IT!!! You already started?? Well, if you had an AMIGA it wouldn't be
that bad as long as the file is written on the upper part of the disk. What
do I mean? Example: I start a disk formatting. OH NO! I forgot about a file
on the disk...ok, quick, change to my DirectoryOpus (V4.12) screen, select
the drive (DF0: where IBM's is A: or B:), after a few seconds the dir comes
up (WHILE the disk is being formatted), now select & copy the file to RAM
or somewhere else. Whew! Got it.
It's not a lie. I've done it before, rare as I usually don't format unless
I have everything off that I want. I've also known others who've done it.
Face it...IBM sucks...even Win95 doesn't have TRUE Multitasking... ONLY the
AMIGA!!!
Pentiums might have the Market but the AMIGA has gone PowerPC & we ALL know
the RISC processor is faster & better. DOOM has also been ported to the
AMIGA. It's runs great on my 68040 @ 28MHZ! Such a SLOW processor was said
it was I M P O S S I B L E to get DOOM to work on. Again, those people were
WRONG! However, even the 68060 @ 75Mhz will be slow some day. That's why the
AMIGA is PowerPC now @ 150 - 233Mhz & getting faster! Quake is being ported
& will be totally compatable with all other versions. There's also Work
going on to have the AMIGA once again Pioneer many new things as it did back
in 1985! If you think Micro$oft was FIRST with most thing, DO THE RESEARCH,
Micro$oft has STOLEN most of their ideas!!!! They've turned around & LIED TO
YOU! IBM has done the SAME!
DOOM has been ported to the AMIGA. Quake has been brought over also. With
the release of QuakePPC, it's once again proven just how WELL a game or program can RUN
when it's ran with a GOOD Operating System.
Now the AMIGA, with a 68040 or 68060 is close to the speed of a P150+ & it
does have extreme User Friendliness, configuration ability, 100% MULTI-TASKING
& an AWESOME OS!! It's OS is Still unmatched to this day...as well as
it's Graphics ability for a Personal Computer.
I have friends whom own AMIGAs' & have their problems. Every computer owner has
some kind of problem. They wouldn't be computers if they didn't have them. ;)
If you've never used an AMIGA with Workbench 3.1 (The best one
yet) then you're Truely missing out on POWER! Forget Workbench 1.3, that
thing is DEAD, GONE, HISTORY, KA-PUT! ;) Though WB1.3 was great at the
time...it definitally met it's age!!!!! UPGRADE TO WB3.1!!! Workbench 3.5
is coming!
I'll be adding some different Screen Shots of my system soon...on my AMIGA page. :)
SeeeeeeYA!!
