INTRODUCTION
The MPE Model PAS-53-0-100/500 is a solid state wide band
linear power amplifier operating in the class AB linear mode with a power level of 200
watts CW/PEP, from 100-500 MHz. The amplifier system will amplify CW, AM,
pulse, FM and phase modulated signals with minimal distortion to very high power levels.
All operating controls and monitoring are accessible from the front panel.
The amplifier is housed in a 19" rackmount case with its own internal power
supply, forced-air cooling and ALC (Automatic Leveling Control) leveling loop. The
input and output impedances are 50 ohms and the unit may be driven to full power output be
most RF synthesizers, signal generators and swpt signal sources.
The amplifer system is fully protected against input overdrive
(in/out-of-band), temperature and output load VSWR conditions. Both the integral
high efficiency power supply and forced-air cooling systems are conservatively designed to
permit operation over all normal operating conditions.
The internal peak responding ALC loop allows the amplifier output to
be leveled over the frequency band in the ALC ON mode. In addition, the front panel
power level control provides a leveled RF power output over a minimum 30 dB dynamic range.
In the ALC OFF mode of operation, the output power is a function of the input
level. Output power, both forward and reflected, is displayed in watts on a front
panel numerical display.
The amplifier includes VSWR protection circuits which are self
correcting as a function of load VSWR. These circuits automatically decrease the
forward power output as the load VSWR increases beyond a safe operating level. As
the amplifier load VSWR improves, the VSWR protection system automatically increases the
forward power up to the maximum output of the system. This forward power adjustment
as a function of load VSWR, is continuous and instaneous in both directions.
Response time of the loop circuit is 150 microseconds. In addition, the ALC
loop is used to protect the amplifier system from RF input overdrive. The amplifier
is modular constructed for ease of maintainability. All RF modules are designed with
a 50 ohm input and output impedance. In the event of a transistor failure, that
particular module can be field replaced without the need for special RF test equipment.

FRONT PANEL CONTROLS
POWER
Circuit breaker provides "ON"/"OFF" power
control and primary power protection of the amplifier system.
ALC (Automatic Level Control)
ALC push-button switch provides "ON"/"OFF"
control of the amplifier system internal ALC leveling loop. The illuminated position
indicated the active mode. On power turn-on, the amplifier system will always position
itself in the ALC "ON" and RF "ON" modes of operation.
ALC "ON" MODE
This mode provides operation of the amplifier system from its
own internal ALC loop.
ALC "OFF" MODE
In this mode, the amplifier can be used as a standard linear RF
amplifier up to the rated power output. Beyond its specified linear power output, internal
circuits will limit the amplifier to rated power output.
POWER LEVEL (10 TURN CONTROL)
Provides adjustment of the RF output power when operating in the
ALC "ON" mode. When the power level control is at maximum clockwise position,
the amplifier will provide rated-leveled RF power output. When the power level control is
fully counter-clockwise, the power is approximately –30 dB below rated power output
level.
FRONT PANEL DISPLAY
WATTS
3 digit, 7 segment, red LED numerical display indicates CW
forward/reverse RF power in watts.
FWD
Bar display (red LED) indicates forward RF power output is
displayed.
REV
Bar display (red LED) indicates reverse RF power output is
displayed. The PUSH FOR REV push-button switch must be depressed to read reverse RF
power output.
UNLEV
Bar display (red LED) indicator is active only when operating
the amplifier in the ALC "ON" mode. The display illuminates indicating an ALC
unleveled condition. This indicator is useful ONLY when the amplifier is operated in a
non-sweep operation (CW mode).
TEMP
Bar display (red LED) indicates an over-temperature condition in
the system. The amplifier system will automatically remove DC power to all bias circuits
should the condition occur. When the temperature reaches a safe operating condition, the
amplifier automatically resumes operation.
PUSH FOR REV
Depressing the PUSH FOR REV push-button switch displays
reverse RF power output. The REV bar display (red LED) illuminates indicating the active
mode.
RF
RF "ON"/"OFF" push-button switch provides
control of the amplifier system RF power output. Depressing the RF switch cycles the RF
output power on and off. The illuminated position indicates the active mode. This control
functions in both ALC modes.
RF "ON" MODE
This mode provides normal amplifier operation. On power turn-on,
the amplifier system always positions itself in the RF "ON" and ALC
"ON" modes of operation.
RF "OFF" MODE
In this mode, the amplifier internal voltage controlled pin
attenuator is positioned at maximum attenuation. (-60 dB, typical, below rated RF power
output)
MODULATION
Provides AM, pulse and square wave modulation of the internal
ALC loop when operating in the ALC "ON" mode. This modulation-input port is DC
coupled. Power output level must be adjusted for different modulation formats. The
amplifier cannot deliver more than rated CW/PEP power.
